Mushroom and ham pizza, Sorrento, Italy

I love to eat, and pizza is one of my favorite foods. A major trip goal for me was to sample the pizza in Italy. Initially, I was a little obsessed with sampling ‘the best’ pizza (or pasta) in each city I visited. I discarded idea immediately after the first meal Italy – HER//Excursions (cloudwaysapps.com). It struck me that any Italian food I indulged in, pizza and pasta in particular, would be better than anything I’d ever had before. There was no point in chasing the elusive (quite so because it varies depending on whom you ask!) ‘best’ food.

My Sorrento pizza experience came about out of convenience. I had spent about 5 hours wandering the cobbled streets of Pompeii and was in need of sustenance. After bypassing at least a dozen eateries, I settled on this one. I ordered the mushroom and ham pizza. It did not disappoint. The dough was light, the pie crunchy on the outside and soft inside. The cheese did not overwhelm me (a feat because I routinely remove wads of cheese from pizza in the States). Mushrooms and ham worked, and all the flavors melded perfectly. It was so good I ate the entire thing in one seating – another feat for me.

Rome, Italy Red Sauce VS White Sauce Pizzas

Left to right: Margherita pizza, White sauce pizza, Peppo al Cosimato, Rome Italy

My Rome food tour would not have been complete without sampling pizza. The tour (Roman food tour in Trastevere) introduces travelers to the wonderful food produced by chefs in the neighborhood. The second to last stop of the tour took us to Peppo al Cosimato Peppo Ristorante. The tasting consisted of classic margherita with fresh basil and a red sauce, and a white version with fresh tomatoes. While different, both versions were equally phenomenal. The vegetables were fresh, the pie divinely crunchy with a wood smoke flavor of the crust.

My Italian food excursion came with negligible meats. I’m talking about pieces of whole meat (chicken, beef lamb etc). Interestingly enough, this carnivore did not miss it. This is important to point out because I typically avoid meatless pizzas like the plague. However, I found the pizza in Italy to be just perfect with minimal to no meat. If this isn’t endorsement of how amazing the pizza is there, I don’t know what is. I highly recommend it!
