I never would have thought that I could ever rave about tiramisu. This is because I prefer cake and pastry-based desserts and tiramisu is a little too creamy for my taste. However, I’m here to tell you that I had the absolute pleasure of enjoying the best tiramisu EVER, and yes, one of the best desserts I’ve EVER had. Confusing, huh?
Friends, say hello to the Limoncello Tiramisu. I indulged in this homemade cake-y concoction when I toured a local family-run Sorrento lemon farm (La Masseria Farm Experience) Italy – HER//Excursions (cloudwaysapps.com) . To digress briefly, Limoncello is a delicious liqueur made from Sorrento lemons. It is often drunk as a digestif after meals. The dessert itself was sheer, indulgent perfection. Suffice to say the cake was moist, with a perfect soft crumb that was complimented by the still vaguely crystalized cream. The Limoncello came through clearly. I whole-heartedly encourage you visit and taste for yourself.
Napoli Just Desserts

If, prior to traveling, someone had told me that Naples produced incredible desserts, I would have rolled my eyes. Pizza, yes, pasta, I’d expect it to be great, but desserts, no. So, color me shocked. I found 2 bakeries, Augustus Napoli Home – Augustus Napoli and Caffe Roma Napoli, close to my accommodation. It made sense to do a head-to-head taste of a few pastries.
I sampled the sfogliatelle ricce, a shell-like filo dough pastry filled with lemon flavored and sweetened ricotta, and candied lemon pieces. I preferred Augustus’ version. Next up was the pastry version of the sfogliatelle, the sfogliatelle frolle. There was no clear winner for this one. Caffe Roma was the clear winner for the final pastry, the baba. Deceptively dense-appearing, the heavily rum-soaked glazed yeast bun is pillowy soft with a just sweet cream filling. I suspect that Caffe Roma won because of the heavy-handed rum use…oops! I also tried pistachio cream and crushed pistachio, or the dense custard and strawberries baba versions from Cafe Roma and they were no less delightful.
