Prior to visiting, it never occurred to me that Toronto was a veritable concrete jungle. Toronto For New Year’s – HER//Excursions (herexcursions.com). I quickly realized that outdoor greenspace is at a premium in Toronto. This makes sense with a population of about 275,000 residents in Downtown Toronto alone. However, I was able to easily find useable greenspace close to Downtown.

A major find was the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail The Trail | Great Lakes Waterfront Trail. The trail is 3,600 km (2236.9 miles) long, just in case you were worried about running out of road. As the name suggests, it runs along the waterfront. I found the trail easily, accessing it close to the Harbourfront Centre. The trail follows the shoreline as much as possible, accommodating buildings as well as construction sites. Small (as well as larger) community parks can also be found on its path. Make sure to enjoy a stroll or run when you visit. Even on a blowsy early January morning, the water views were great. And you also have an opportunity to warm up by stopping in one of the numerous cafes close to the trail for a hot beverage.

I was disappointed that my short stay prevented me from visiting the Toronto Islands. They are home to what appear to be great outdoor multi-use trails. A quick online search reveals more extensive parks just to the periphery of downtown. Visitors with more time can plan to enjoy the just a fraction of these green spaces.
