Two Black Bakers to try in the Triad Area

I love baked goods. Fresh bread, non-commercial scratch-made cakes, cookies…you name the baked carb and I’ll probably like it or at least try it. That said, I’m very discerning about what I eat. I grew up eating European-influenced desserts, heavy on flavor and not as sweet as American desserts. Additionally, and no less importantly, it was either home-baked or specialized bakeries.

As a result, I set out to find Black Bakers offering unique baked goods that I could enjoy talented black chefs and bakers in the triad area (herexcursions.com). I found several in the Triad area but due to time constraints, I chose the following two to try.

CHEZ MOI BAKERY

Rhonda Jones has been sharing her passion for rum cakes for years. And well she should. Her cakes are phenomenal. The bad news is that Chez Moi bakery Rum – Chez Moi Bakery (iloverumcake.com) does not have a store front (yet, I’m sure). The good news is that she does limited delivery in Durham, while those of us a little further afield can get her goods by mail. I ordered a small Black Cherry Bourbon cake and a spiced Carolina Rum cake. No complaints. The flavors are true, and the cakes are feathery light. Order a cake or two. You’re welcome.

FAVOR DESSERT BAKERY

I was sure I would be the first person at the bakery HOME | Favor Desserts as I arrived over 10 mins early from opening time. Nope. There was a car with a couple already waiting patiently in the driveway. Not two minutes later another car pulled up and I had to smile. If that is not testament to good baked goods, I don’t know what is.

The large glass case chock-full of delicious cakes beckoned as I walked in. I was immediately overwhelmed. I wanted EVERYTHING. But there’s only one of me a gluttony is not cool. My very difficult choices came down to a pineapple slice, triple-layered red velvet and strawberry slice, a vanilla and a strawberry cupcake. In retrospect, I regret not also adding the lemon cake but in my defense, my senses were overloaded, and smoke may or may have been leaking from my ears in fits of ecstatic spasms.

What I really liked about the bakery was that it enabled options of cream cheese and buttercream to most of the choices. Complete cakes can also be ordered, including specialty cakes – wedding, birthdays etc. How were the cakes, you ask. Delicious. I’m glad I don’t live close by Flavor Dessert wreak havoc to me in all kinds of ways. Stop by and see for yourself.
